What screams Christmas more than a hot cup of mulled wine? Whether at a (small) gathering or when out and about, there’s really nothing comparing to that warm citrusy, cinnamony aroma filling the festive air, and we at Etisha Collective are absolute fans.

And since each of us has her own taste, this is what we at the Team will be choosing this Winter to warm up our snowy evenings.

Traditional German Glühwein

The classic take on mulled wine, traditionally paired with a walk around a Christmas market.

You will need:

  • the juice of a medium orange
  • 220ml of water
  • 50g cup of sugar
  • 20 whole cloves, studded on two halved oranges
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 whole star anise
  • one bottle of red wine

Simmer the spices in the orange juice mixed with water on a very low heat for about 20 minutes, then dissolve the sugar in the mix. Add a bottle dry red wine (we like a Cabernet Sauvignon), paying extra care not to let it boil.

(a shot) of rum or amaretto liquor to make your drink extra special, as every Glühwein stand in Germany will remind you!

White Wine Mulled Wine

For those of us who are watching the tannins, or prefer to enjoy this mulled drink during a home gathering and still spare that white sofa cover… or our beautiful Peshmatal gracefully thrown on the armchair. 

, but substitute the red wine for a dry white wine (Riesling works wonders). You can also add a sliced lemon (and compensate with a couple additional tablespoons of sugar) and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Hot Pimm’s

Not technically a mulled wine, but as we love Pimm’s & Lemonade during the Summer months, we love it in its warm version during the Winter.

You will need:

  • 400ml apple juice
  • a cinnamon stick
  • a medium orange, sliced
  • 50ml Pimm’s
  • a shot of rum

After simmering the cinnamon stick and the orange slices in apple juice for about 15 minutes, turn off the heat, add Pimm’s and a shot of rum. A perfect drink for the coldest days, the warm tones remind us of the subtle elegance of our Earth Lines.

 Apple Punch (alcohol-free)

Still incredibly festive, but alcohol-free. Sometimes called “the children version of ”, this drink has nothing to envy to its alcoholic counterpart and it’s sure to please both children and adults alike.

You will need: 

  • 500ml apple juice
  • 500ml water
  • a small cinnamon stick 
  • 1-star anise (omit if it’s for children, we have noticed most of them don’t love it)
  • 50g honey
  • 40g lemon juice
  • 1 orange, sliced

Let everything simmer and infuse together for about 15 minutes, then enjoy the healthy, crisp sweetness of this warm punch. We imagine drinking it whilst wrapped in one of our Plush & Bare towels, just out of the sauna, contemplating the gently falling snow.

Scandinavian Gløgg

Superiorly spiced and aromatic, the Scandi take on mulled wine feels almost like a gingerbread dessert in a cup.

You will need: 

  • 2 sticks of cinnamon 
  • 5g grated ginger root
  • 1 tbs of grated orange zest
  • 5 full cardamom pods
  • 10 whole cloves
  •  80g sugar 
  •  a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon

After simmering all the ingredients together, infusing your home with the most divine Christmas smell, you can add some flaked almonds and raisins , and finally the wine (plus a splash of either rum or even cognac from the cabinet for that extra kick). Perfect for the weekend spent at the chalet, to drink in front of the fireplace and to enjoy as a very special treat.

Hot Cider Sangria

For those of us who are dreaming of those summer Mallorcan evenings, where fresh sangria flows along with the music. This drink requires a bit more preparation, but your guests are positively guaranteed to ask for seconds.

You will need:

  • 1l apple cider
  • 85g light honey
  • 1 apple sliced
  • 2 clementines, halved
  • 11 clementine, zested
  • 7 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise
  • the seeds of a vanilla pod
  • half a teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • a bottle of Garnacha (the Spanish Grenache)
  • 120ml of dark rum

Start with zesting the clementine, then add all the fruit, spices and honey to the apple cider. Let simmer on low heat for 15 minutes and turn off the heat before adding one bottle of red wine (we like a Garnacha for this recipe) and optionally a generous splash of dark rum.
